Welcome to our Positive Mental Health and Wellbeing area
At Stanhope Primary School, we aim together with parents/carers and the local authority to promote positive mental health for all of our children and staff.
We follow this aim using both universal, whole school approaches and specialised, targeted approaches aimed at vulnerable students. In an average classroom, three children will be suffering from a diagnosable mental health issue. Accordingly, we also aim to recognise and respond to mental ill health by developing and implementing effective mental health policies and procedures.
Mental health is a state of wellbeing in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community. (World Health Organisation).
Teaching about Mental Health
The skills knowledge and understanding needed by our children to keep themselves and others healthy and safe are included as part of PSHE curriculum. Health and Relationships Education are the statutory topics being taught from September 2020.
The specific content and delivery will be determined by the specific needs of the cohort and there will always be an emphasis on enabling children to develop skills, knowledge understanding, language and confidence to seek help for themselves and others. The school follows the PSHE Association Guidance to ensure they teach mental health and emotional wellbeing issues in a safe and sensitive manner.

Reception took part in yoga this morning! The children had lots of done and started their week relaxed!
During Healthy Week the children have taken part in a range of activities to promote mental and physical health. The children spent some time on Thursday morning making fruit kebabs. The children have learned the importance of eating healthy.
On Friday, year 3 visited Harton Grange care home to spread some Christmas cheer. They sang Christmas songs for the residents, who loved it. The children were amazing and a credit to the school. Well done Year 3
