Welcome to our Positive Mental Health and Wellbeing page

At Stanhope Primary School, we aim together with parents/carers and the local authority to promote positive Mental Health for all of our children and staff.

We follow this aim using both universal, whole school approaches and specialised, targeted approaches aimed at vulnerable students. In an average classroom, three children will be suffering from a diagnosable mental health issue.

Accordingly, we also aim to recognise and respond to mental ill health by developing and implementing effective mental health policies and procedures.

Mental health is a state of wellbeing in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community. (World Health Organisation).

Teaching about Mental Health

The skills knowledge and understanding needed by our children to keep themselves and others healthy and safe are included as part of PSHE curriculum.  Health and Relationships Education are the statutory topics being taught from September 2020.

The specific content and delivery will be determined by the specific needs of the cohort and there will always be an emphasis on enabling children to develop skills, knowledge understanding, language and confidence to seek help for themselves and others. The school follows the PSHE Association Guidance to ensure they teach Mental Health and emotional wellbeing issues in a safe and sensitive manner.

Events

We strive to develop positive Mental Health in our children and their families in fun and novel ways throughout the year. Our children and families are welcomed to take part in numerous events, with a focus on varying topics and an emphasis on supporting each other. Take a look at some of our past and current events.

World Mental Health day, 10th October 2024 –

On Thursday 10th October Bethan from The Healthy Minds Team delivered a whole school assembly for our pupils to recognise and understand Mental Health. Educating our pupils about mental health can –

  • Reduce the fear of experiencing mental health symptoms.
  • Reduce the stigma around seeking care for mental health.
  • Helps children feel more comfortable about discussing their own mental health or that of a friend.
  • It normalizes the topic and opens up opportunities for concerns to be shared and addressed.

After the assembly our Wellbeing Warriors took the lead on a cake sale to raise money to support Wellbeing sessions within school. Our Warriors showed kindness, bravery and confidence in doing this, they enjoyed a sweet treat of their own after for their hard work.

Wellbeing Warriors –

The Healthy Minds Team are coming into school to deliver Peer Mentoring sessions to 12 pupils from Year 1 to Year 6. Once completed these pupils will have the skills and knowledge to support their peers when they are struggling. These pupils are this year’s Wellbeing Warriors and have developed their skills listening, empathy and knowing when to seek support for an adult.
