Christingle means ‘Christ’s Light’ and it is a symbol of the Christian faith.
Christingles are made up of different parts, each one being there to remind us of something.
The orange represents the world.
The candle reminds Christians of Jesus who they believe to be the light of the world.
The red ribbon goes all round the ‘world’ and being the colour of blood, reminds Christians that Jesus died.
The four cocktail sticks could have either of two meanings; the four seasons or the four corners of the world.
The sweets (or sometimes dried fruit) remind Christians of God’s gifts to the world including kindness and love.
Throughout this week, the children at Stanhope Primary School have been taking part in International week. Each class has selected their own Country to study ranging from Australia to the Antarctic!

Year 4 enjoyed a visit to The Word in South Shields. Having practiced and been filmed by South Tyneside Council and Unified Media recently, skipping and singing some skipping songs written by local writer Tom Kelly. They attended the launch of a new exhibition (which features the pupils’ film) in the Pod, displayed on the first floor to celebrate the tradition of skipping.
They even got to have juice and a biscuit with the Mayor and Mayoress who were both very impressed with our film!
FACT: Did you know that skipping is one of the best forms of cardio exercise?
