South Tyneside Basketball Qualifiers – Success!

7th December 2017A Rogers

On Thursday 7th December 14 pupils from KS2 competed at Temple Park Leisure Centre in the South Tyneside H4H qualifiers.

Our 2 teams competed with wonderful team spirit against 36 other teams – with the aim of reaching the H4H Finals night in January 2018.

The drive, focus, superb drills and sportsmanship from our teams was second-to-none, giving 100%to their team in each and every game.

Our team 1 topped their morning group winning all 5 games convincingly, while team 2 finished also won their group with 3 wins and 2 draws, to both reach the last 16 knock-out stages.

Here Stanhope 1 were paired against Stanhope 2 sadly, they had a fantastic battle, with Team 1 winning 18-0 , to advance to the final 8 teams. Next they played against Biddick Hall 1. In what was a very physical game we prevailed with fantastic leadership and agility demonstrated by Aston Hall (Captain), Charlie Bates (Vice-Captain) and Brooke Urwin in particular – scoring some wonderful baskets.

Well done to everyone that took part on the day and the parental support that we enjoyed at Temple Park. The team consisting of Aston Hall (Captain), Charlie Bates (Vice-Captain), Marc Shone, Jack Garlinge, Haiden Jones, Brooke Urwin and Beth Thompson will now play at Sports Central on Friday12th January at 6pm.

It would be wonderful if we can get a lot of children and family members from our school community to attend this prestigious event. All tickets to watch Stanhope and the Newcastle Eagles will be free. It will be a fun filled and exciting night for Stanhope’s school community!

This promises to be a very special occasion for our school, having qualified for such a great competition for the very second year in succession.

Basketball Regional Finals 2017

20th September 2017A Rogers

On Friday 16th June our Year 5/6 basketball team travelled to Newcastle to take part in the Regional Basketball Finals.  They played 5 matches in the group stage.  We got off to a unlucky start losing to Glynwood Primary (Gateshead), who would eventually finish in 3rd place. In the next game we were beaten in the final moments by a single basket to Bridgewater Primary (Newcastle), we bounced back to then win 4-0 vs. Gosforth Academy (Newcastle) and played even better to gain a 10-0 success against Malvin’s Primary (Northumberland). In our final game we were unlucky not to get a more positive result losing once again by a single basket to Wellfield Middle School (Newcastle). Therefore we were knocked out in the group stages. Preston Grange (North Tyneside) defeated Gosforth Central Middle School 4-2 in a throughly entertaining final. Overall each and everyone of the 10 players gave their all and I am very proud of the way you conducted yourselves. You have worked so hard over the past few months in preparation for this event. A special mention must go to Kai Muir (Captain) who was truly outstanding in his play making in each and every moment throughout the tournament.

Both Kai and Maddison Fontaine were talent spotted by the Newcastle Eagles and invited to come along for trials in July. Congratulations!

Basketball Finals H4H Newcastle 2017

9th January 2017A Rogers

On Friday 6th January our 7 remaining A Team pupils competed in the Hoops4Health Finals at Sports Central, Newcastle.  It was wonderful to watch the North Stand of Sport Central steadily filling up with nearly 100 excited families and friends from Stanhope.  This was an amazing community effort, getting behind the team in a big finals event! Our players were really motivated to play in front of so much support, and give their very best.

The Stanhope team took to the court for the first semi-final against East Boldon. We immediately started positively, as we passed the ball around confidently. A flowing team move saw us take an early lead with Charlie Bates (Captain) finding the basket with a fine long range effort. This was met by a fantastic roar from the Stanhope support!  We sadly couldn’t build on this lead and after much pressure conceeded 3 baskets to lose 6-2.

The final took place at half-time in the Eagles game, in a front of 3000 at Sport Central. St. Bede’s RC S/S took on East Boldon winning 4-0.

Well done to the skillful and dedicated players who had all trained outside with such commitment in the build up to the finals throughout a cold December.  Finally, a massive thank you to the outstanding school community, for your support on a memorable sporting occasion for our school. Hopefully we will be back better and stronger once again next year!
