National Day of Reflection

19th March 2021S Office
MARIE CURIE EVENT 🟡🟡🟡🟡🟡🟡🟡🟡🟡🟡
On Tuesday 23rd March 2021, we will be supporting National Day of Reflection.
Below is a short section of information from the Marie Curie website:
Since the first lockdown began in 2020, hundreds of thousands of people have died. Too many lives have been cut short and millions have been bereaved.
Behind the statistics and whatever the cause, every death has been devastating for the people left behind.
Join us on 23 March, the first anniversary of the first UK lockdown, for a National Day of Reflection to reflect on our collective loss, support those who’ve been bereaved, and hope for a brighter future.
There are still tough times ahead, as the death toll continues to rise. This annual day will give us all time to pause and think about this unprecedented loss we’re facing, and support each other through grief in the years to come.
We ask that all children wear something yellow to support this event. Parents DO NOT need to go to any expense, it could be a yellow hair band, socks, t-shirt, tights etc.
The children will take part in activities throughout the day.
Thank you

Important Information from Nexus

3rd March 2021S Office
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM NEXUS
Nexus and bus operators are working hard to make sure that parents and guardians can have confidence when pupils need to travel by public transport to and from schools, which are set to go back from week commencing Monday March 8.
We are providing extra vehicles and drivers across Tyne and Wear, following familiar routes with the highest demand, to improve social distancing and ensure children can get to and from school safely.
It would be really helpful if you could help to share these messages with your staff and pupils:
Families should plan how their children will reach schools and colleges comfortably – walking and cycling where journeys are shorter, using a car for part of the journey but dropping off away from school gates, and identifying which public transport they can use if they need to.
There will be extra buses on many services goings to or near schools, following established routes. These will include buses on busy routes so pupils can travel separately to other passengers.
Pupils using public transport should use a contactless card or have exact change to make their journey – some operators also have mobile phone ticket apps that allow gifting from parents to a child’s account; check operator websites for details.
Anyone using public transport should follow standard public health advice – washing hands thoroughly throughout the day, wearing a face covering if aged over 11 and not exempt, and not travelling if they have symptoms of Covid-19. Ensure you maintaining social distancing, where possible, including at busy entrances, exits, under canopies, bus stops, platforms or outside of stations.
Pupils should wear face coverings when using any public transport, including all buses dedicated to transport to and from schools, except where there is an exemption on health grounds. Please reinforce this with your pupils. Bus drivers may refuse boarding to passengers without face coverings, but we and our industry partners want to avoid that situation. Where you require pupils to wear face covering as part of the school day this could be incorporated into your wider messaging – but even if not, can you stress that pupils using public transport have and use face coverings.
In many cases bus companies are providing duplicate vehicles immediately behind a normal bus to provide segregation for pupils. In these cases, pupils will be directed to board the following vehicles which will have the letter ‘S’ displayed alongside the route number. Pupils may need to pay on the normal bus then walk round to the duplicate vehicle. This system has worked effectively in those parts of the region where it started last week – but once again your help in communicating this is appreciated.
You can find general advice to families at www.nexus.org.uk/covid-secure.
Please pass this web link on to assist parents, the website will be updated regularly. It is really important we hear about any issues that arise in the first weeks of term – feedback from schools and local authority colleagues which will help us move resources and communicate effectively to best meet the needs of local people.
Please use the dedicated email address [email protected] to feed back any issues, including reports of busy services, concerns of parents and guardians, and highways problems around school gates – particularly if these affect bus services.
It often takes time for public transport provision to settle at the resumption of the school year, but we know that this year will be more challenging, and that the communities we serve will have understandable concerns about how busy and reliable bus and Metro services are. By working with you we can seek to address and allay those concerns.
Thank you

We are delighted to say, that we have recently opened applications for the 7th series of Junior Bake Off; a Channel 4 programme that celebrates the culinary talent and ambition of the younger generation in Britain.

Filming would take place from July 2021, but our applications close on Sunday 28th March 2021.

Interested bakers can apply online at – WWW.APPLYFORJUNIORBAKEOFF.CO.UK.

I have attached an A4 flyer in case you would like to hand these out or pop these up on your communal notice boards.

Alternatively, if you would like us to send you hard copies of flyers, I would be more than happy to post some to the school.

Online Safety – Remote Learning

4th February 2021S Office

Keeping Children Safe in Education

Please find below a section regarding online safety. Please click the links which will direct you to useful websites.

The use of technology has become a significant component of many safeguarding
issues. Child sexual exploitation; radicalisation; sexual predation: technology often
provides the platform that facilitates harm. An effective approach to online safety
empowers a school or college to protect and educate the whole school or college
community in their use of technology and establishes mechanisms to identify,
intervene in, and escalate any incident where appropriate.

The breadth of issues classified within online safety is considerable, but can be
categorised into three areas of risk:

• content: being exposed to illegal, inappropriate or harmful material; for example
pornography, fake news, racist or radical and extremist views;

• contact: being subjected to harmful online interaction with other users; for
example commercial advertising as well as adults posing as children or young
adults; and

• conduct: personal online behaviour that increases the likelihood of, or causes,
harm; for example making, sending and receiving explicit images, or online
bullying.

Education

Opportunities to teach safeguarding, including online safety, are discussed at paragraph
88-90. Resources that could support schools and colleges include:

• Be Internet Legends developed by Parent Zone and Google is a free internet
safety curriculum with PSHE accredited lesson plans and teaching resources for
Key Stage 2 pupils

• Disrespectnobody is Home Office advice and includes resources on healthy
relationships, including sexting and pornography

• Education for a connected world framework from the UK Council for Internet
Safety supports the development of the curriculum and is of particular relevance to
RSHE education and Computing. It is designed, however, to be usable across the
curriculum and beyond (covering early years through to age 18) and to be central
to a whole school or college approach to safeguarding and online safety.

• PSHE association provides guidance to schools on developing their PSHE
curriculum

• Teaching online safety in school is departmental guidance outlining how schools
can ensure their pupils understand how to stay safe and behave online as part of
existing curriculum requirements

• Thinkuknow is the National Crime Agency/CEOPs education programme with age
specific resources

• UK Safer Internet Centre developed guidance and resources that can help with
the teaching of the online safety component of the Computing Curriculum.

Protecting children

Governing bodies and proprietors should be doing all that they reasonably can to limit
children’s exposure to the above risks from the school’s or college’s IT system. As part
of this process, governing bodies and proprietors should ensure their school or college
has appropriate filters and monitoring systems in place.
Whilst considering their responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of
children, and provide them with a safe environment in which to learn, governing bodies
and proprietors should consider the age range of their pupils, the number of pupils,
how often they access the IT system and the proportionality of costs vs risks.

The appropriateness of any filters and monitoring systems are a matter for individual
schools and colleges and will be informed in part, by the risk assessment required by
the Prevent Duty. The UK Safer Internet Centre has published guidance as to what
“appropriate” filtering and monitoring might look like: UK Safer Internet Centre:
appropriate filtering and monitoring.

Guidance on e-security is available from the National Education Network. Support for
schools is available via the: schools’ buying strategy with specific advice on
procurement here: buying for schools.

Whilst filtering and monitoring is an important part of the online safety picture for
schools and colleges to consider, it is only one part. Governors and proprietors should
consider a whole school or college approach to online safety. This will include a clear
policy on the use of mobile technology in the school or college. Many children have
unlimited and unrestricted access to the internet via 3G, 4G and 5G in particular and
the school and college should carefully consider how this is managed on their
premises.

Whilst it is essential that governing bodies and proprietors ensure that appropriate
filters and monitoring systems are in place, they should be careful that “over blocking”
does not lead to unreasonable restrictions as to what children can be taught with
regard to online teaching and safeguarding.
